Just a Thought

James 4:11-12

Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, He who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor.

I’m sure it has a lot to do with the way I was raised by my parents.  And, while I was only in a fraternity for eight months, it was reinforced during that brief stint as well … never “negative recruit”.  To say it another way; rather choose to speak of your positives, not of others negatives.

In this industry we call sports agency, we are surrounded by “negative recruiters”.  There are even those that thrive on telling people what they want to hear, as opposed to what they need to hear and how they seem to be the only individual(s), amongst 750 some certified, competent individuals, that know how to do things the right way.  The funny thing about the negative recruiters … (for the most part) once they have successfully negotiated a contract on behalf of their client and, subsequently, are due commission, things in the relationship all of the sudden seem to change.  Whereas before, the agent or agency were all about the client and attentive to his every need … Now, the client seems to be handed off to the lower level individuals and treated as a second tier client.  I refer to this as once being the big fish in the little pond, being snagged in the net and thrown into the big pond with all the other bigger fish (now becoming the little fish in the big pond).

Romans 12:19

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord”

I recently had the privilege of negotiating a contract for a client that made him at the time, the tenth highest paid player at his position.  That made me feel very good on behalf of the player and his family, who time and time again assured me how they trusted me.

The problem was, leading up to that event.  There were several (five to be exact) months of dealing with the unethical scum of our industry who continually called my client to fill his head with fear, doubt and uncertainty.  Fortunately, we have a relationship built upon trust and communication.  This particular client would call me each and every time someone would attack me and bring my credibility into question.  My natural reaction, each and every time, was to get angry … VERY angry.  On one such occasion, I told my client I was going to report an individual who was blatantly breaking the rules we operate under by calling my client outside the scope of a defined time (yes, it states in the CBA that other agents are actually allowed to call a client during a defined time table).   But I would quickly remind myself that my client didn’t have to call and share this information with me.  No, his calls were more so an indication of how solid our foundation was.  Furthermore, this one particular agent represented a friend of my client (which explains why he was calling) and my client asked that I not report the individual … so I respected my client and never made the call.

Of course, the bigger picture is how nothing that goes on amongst our hectic, and often times, chaotic lives, goes unseen or unnoticed by God.  As I often refer to Him, “The Big Guy upstairs” has a handle on things down here.

1 Corinthians 6:10

Nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God

So, as I set out on the road and embark on another season of recruitment, I am reminded, just because everyone else is doing it, that does not make it right or OK for you to do it as well.  Stay true to your morals and ethics and allow God to guide you through your journey, for He wants good for you and, as we all know, (James 1:17) Every good and perfect gift comes from above coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
